About Victor Ramirez Tutoring

Origin Story

Like in any origin story, the protagonist typically starts at rock bottom. My version of that came my sophomore year of undergrad when I was having difficulty with a computing course. I was doing quite poorly and at one point had a D+, which was the worst I had ever done academically. In a last-ditch effort, I attended a session at the UMass Lowell tutoring center and was lucky to do so with someone who really ended up helping me out. He could see that I was anxious and, with some of the coursework, clueless. However, he did not judge me for where I was; rather, he did everything he could to get me going on the right path without fully solving a problem for me. He was clear that he wanted to help me, but that I needed to carry the solution through myself. The impact he had on me was more profound than the turnaround in my grade that followed: it inspired me to want to replicate it with the subjects I was strong in.

As I gained experience as a UMass Lowell tutor, I quickly learned that many students who came to tutoring were doing so in a situation similar to mine: anxious about what the future held for them in terms of how their grade would affect their GPA, major, and ultimately their career past college. To address these concerns, I centered my approach to tutoring around ensuring that I understood my students' perspectives and what they were looking to achieve. Over time, I have refined and expanded this approach to include students in middle and high school, along with the domains they study. I build this approach around clear communication, trust, and setting standards that both parties agree on.

While I was tutoring at UMass, I was also earning my B.S. and M.S. in physics. It was not obvious to me during my first two or three years of college what career I would translate that into, so I had to trust that the combination of hard work and strong mentorship at UML would lead me to my path. I was fortunate to find that mentorship under my thesis adviser in graduate school, and ultimately to find my footing in systems engineering in the semiconductor domain, where I work today. It is that same uncertainty about the future that I recognize in many of my students, and so beyond tutoring a subject, I hope to help answer the questions I once asked my own mentors when I was where my students are now.

Lastly, I am a Burlington, MA native and have a deep belief that building a strong community centers on institutions that enable the youth to develop into mature, responsible young adults who feel they have ownership in that community. My vision for this business is to serve that role on whatever scale it may be, and I see each student I work with as part of giving back to those who allowed me to flourish here.
